CLICK
maybe in five years time
I’ll suddenly cross your mind
and you’ll wonder
what that starry-eyed girl
(who was so desperately in love with you)
is up to now
your finger will hover over the green dot
next to my name…
click.
you didn’t know that I cut my hair
click.
or that I left the suburb next to the sea
click.
to make a life in the city that never sleeps
your finger will hover over the green dot
next to my name…
but you do not
click.
Inspiration:
maybe in five years
our paths will cross again
i will tell you how desperately in love i was
with you
and we can laugh about how
we broke each other’s hearts
– Selina Soldner
Dedication: remembering back to that teenage phase in my life.
From when we were thirteen, for when we will be thirty. I’ve exploited our memories for inspiration’s sake or otherwise so many times and I can’t help wondering if you’d ever stop and remember too, even just for a moment.
Description: I’ve decided to challenge myself by writing this poem in English then translating it to Chinese because I am very curious about the subtleties that are destroyed and the others that are created through this process.
It has helped me, or rather forced me to find and then preserve the essence of the piece beyond language barriers. Apologies if anything sounds harsh or awkward, I’m not as proficient in Chinese as I would like to be, but this is one of the ways I am trying to hold on to my mother tongue.
Nice piece of work. It briefly hit me. I’ve enjoyed reading it.

Beautiful and effective. Even though I don’t know how to speak/read Mandarin/Cantonese, I appreciate that you thought about the “subtleties” lost in translation.

Oh, yes. They are so tiny that they sneak in without you knowing. Be careful they might get into your mismatched socks.

This poem, it reminds me of my past and how much it hurts because it will be permanent… and yet, i regret nothing… nicely done
